Regressing or Progressing?

The Uber rape case in India has opened up a huge debate, about morality, safety , change as a society , pepper spray, corruption, foreign companies, western culture the list goes on. According to an article, there is a view point that the lady should not have slept, so its her fault (that is a new low even by Indian standards).

This got me thinking, are we regressing or progressing as a society, lets face it , there never has been a great respect for women in India.But I would like to think that this is changing, there are reported 93 rapes in India in a day, lets not even go to the marital rapes. A couple of years ago this statistic would’nt even have seen the light of day. This means that more and more women are coming forward and telling the society that they are being abused. This is a good thing at least they are no longer willing to be a silent victim.

Everyone is (even the religious outfits) beginning to realize that blaming the victim’s clothes, character or some other idiotic feature will not even make a dent in the public opinion of rapist or the victim. I am not saying that the victim blaming is decreasing but it is slowly losing steam. Women are coming forward in defense of women, which is actually a huge thing in a country which is male dominated.

The public outcry is slowly permeating into the consciousness of the country that a woman is important and you can treat her like garbage. She is not a sex slave or mother Mary she is a person. It has become a national debate, one which is forcing our government and the police to look hard at themselves. It has also forced the media to report rapes and take it seriously.

All those regressive TV serials also play a part i think in telling the world that a woman can be strong, independent and clever and does not need to be hand held. But then there is the actress who plays the evil stepmother or something like that again we slip back .

I think we are moving forward and back at the same time, but that is to be expected where there is a monumental change going on.  .
